OBITUARY
MR. HEINRICH WILHELM TAEGE.

A well-known and highly respected resident of Limestone Ridges, Mr. Heinrich Wilhelm Taege, died suddenly at his home, Spring Vale Farm, on May 7 at the age of 57 years.  Though in indifferent health for the past five or six years, his sudden death came as a great shock to his many relatives and friends.  The late Mr. Taege was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Taege, and was born in January 1879, at Alberton, Logan, where the early part of his life was spent.  In March, 1903, he married Miss Minna Knack, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. Knack, of Summer Holm, where he was engaged in dairying for 15 years.  From there he went with his wife and family to the Clinton Vineyards, at Coominya.  After seven years at

Coominya he purchased the "Spring Vale Farm" at

Limestone Ridges, where he and his family have resided for

the past 11 years.  Mr. Taege was of a very kindly and sociable disposition, and made many friends in the different districts in which he lived.  He leaves a wife and grown up family of seven sons and two daughters, and also four grandchildren, all of whom live in Limestone Ridges.  The sons are Messrs. Charles, William, Jeffred, Norman, Percy, Cecil, and Harold, the three first named being married and two daughters, Misses Beatrice and Sylvia.

Mr. Taege also leaves four brothers and five sisters to mourn his loss.  The brothers are Messrs. Frank and Fred, Nambour; Wilhelm and Charles, North Arm; and the sisters are Mrs. A.E. Lythall, Nundah; Mrs. L. Goos, Nambour; Mrs. J. Wright, Yandina; Mrs. J. Danielson, Cairns; and Mrs. F. Lubke, Lowood.  The funeral, which was the largest in this district for many years, left his late residence for the Harrisville Cemetery.  The late Mr. Taege's six sons were the pall-bearers.  The last rites at the graveside were conducted by Rev. Heaton, who also held a service at the residence.

Weddings

A very pretty wedding was solemnised at the Boonah Methodist Church on Saturday evening, April 8th, by Rev. Muir of Harrisville, when the marriage took place of Lillian Jean, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Wegener of Dugandan, to Percy, fifth son of Mrs. H.W. Taege and the late Mr. Taege, of Limestone Ridges.

... ... ...

The bride was charmingly gowned in white mariette, cut on classic lines, inset with long close fitting sleeves of silk lace, with matching veil of embroidered tulle attached to a dainty coronet of orange blossoms.  She carried a dainty bouquet of roses, carnations and gerberas.

... ... ...

After the ceremony about 40 guests attended the wedding breakfast which was held at the home of the bride's parents.

... ... ...

Mr. and Mrs. P. Taege will make their future home at Milbong.

Death of Lillian Taege

30 September 1940

Sadly, the marriage was short-lived as a little over a year later, Percy, Lillian and their two children, Desmond (15 months) and Errol (8 weeks), were involved in a vehicle accident.  Percy and the children survived but Lillian died the following day.

Close to one year after Lillian's death, little Errol died.  Lillian and Errol are buried in the Coulson Cemetery, Scenic Rim Region, Queensland.

Desmond Alwyn Taege

Born 14 July 1939, Boonah.  Died 26 June 2014, Goodna.

Desmond was the eldest son of Percy and Lillian.  He went on to receive an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for voluntary services to school sport, particularly rugby league and cricket from 1958 - 2005.  Long-time school sport colleague Murray Rogers was quoted as saying:

"He had a love and a passion of kids and sport,'' Rogers said.

"He did rugby league, he did athletics, he did cricket. He was boots and all into any sport that kids wanted to play because he was just really passionate about seeing kids actively involved in sport.

"He was also a wonderful classroom teacher.''

Cecil served in the CMF from 22 September 1941 to 14 April 1943 when he joined the AIF.  He served in the AIF from 15 April 1943 to 8 November 1945 attached to the 16 Aust Fd Coy RAE (Royal Australian Engineers).  He served overseas (New Guinea & Bougainville/Solomon Islands) for 569 days during World War II.

He was shipped to Merauke, New Guinea, arriving 8 May 1943.  In November 1943 he was flown to Townsville on leave and arrived back in Merauke in January 1944.  He left Merauke on 26 June 1944 on board the "Islander" and arrived in Cairns 2 July 1944.

The next entry shows him leaving Brisbane on 6 December 1944, arriving in Bougainville 12 December 1944.

On 17 April 1945 he was transferred to 19 Aust Field Ambulance with P.U.O. (Pyrexia - fever - of unknown origin).  This diagnosis was changed to Malaria.  He was returned to his unit on 28 April 1945.

On 14 July 1945 he was flown from Treasury Island, New Guinea, to Cairns on leave.  It seems he did not return to New Guinea but was transferred to 12 Aust Gen Coy, Victoria.  He was discharged on 8 November 1945 and it seems his home address had been changed to Morwell, Victoria.

Note:  The AIF (Australian Imperial Force) consisted of volunteers for service worldwide.

The CMF (Citizens Military Force) were partly conscripted and liable for service only in Australia and defined area in the South West Pacific (mainly New Guinea).

In Memoriam

TAEGE - In loving memory of our dear father, father-in-law, and grandfather, Frederick Taege, who passed away on 1st September 1945 at the Brisbane General Hospital.

God saw how he was suffering,
He knew he had his share;
He quietly closed his weary eyes,
And took him in his care.

Inserted by his loving daughters, son, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

Leslie Frederick Taege

In 1940 the minimum enlistment age was 20 yrs.  Leslie enlisted on 18 July 1940 and, being born on 8 September 1921, would have been only 18 yrs old.  On 22 June 1941 he died, at the age of 19 yrs.  His army records, however, show his date of birth as 8 September 1919 so it seems he was one more brave soldier who lied about his age to serve his country.

He was initially buried in Jezzine, Lebanon.  This is recorded as "50 yds S. two Almond Trees".  About four months later he was reburied in Beirut War Cemetery.

TAEGE - In sad and loving memory of my dearly beloved Son and our Brother, Leslie Frederick, who was killed in action 22nd June, 1941, at Syria.

Your end was sad dear, Les;

You made us weep and sigh;

So short and sudden was the call,

You never had time to say good-bye

You left home with a smiling face

Not thinking you would never return

To the ones that loved you so dear.

Our hearts ache with sadness,

Our eyes shed many a tear,

Gone from us that smiling face,

Those happy cheerful ways.

The smile that won so many friends

In happy bygone days

Inserted by his loving Father, Sisters and Brothers.

Ronald George Taege
TAEGE Ronald George Edit.jpg

Ronald enlisted on 1 May 1942, age 18 yrs in the CMF (Citizen Military Force).  In June 1943 he transferred to the AIF (Australian Imperial Force).  There were different age limits that applied to each of these and those age limits also changed as the war progressed.  Those who served in the CMF could be sent no further than the South-West Pacific (most to the New Guinea area).  Those serving in the AIF were generally sent further overseas.

Ronald was discharged on 23 September 1946.  He served a total of 369 days outside Australia.

11 November 1943 Ronald embarked "Katoomba" for Port Morseby attached to the 2/156 Aust Gen Tpt Coy.  In May 1944 he contracted malaria.

17 May 1945 he embarked Townsville on "General McRae" and disembarked Morotia (Dutch New Guinea).

16 July 1945 he embarked Morotia on "Manoora" and disembarked British North Borneo.  He was appointed Lance Corporal.

28 November 1945 he was evacuated CCS (PUO) - Casualty Clearing Station with Pyrexia (fever) of unknown origin.

21 December 1945 he embarked for Sydney as medical evacuation.  (Note:  Japanese surrendered in South-West Pacific in September 1945.)
